An American's Love Affair with Italy
I'm Scott Murray — an American travel writer who fell in love with Italy on my first visit and never looked back. From the cobblestone streets of Rome to the vineyard-covered hills of Tuscany, from the canals of Venice to the sun-drenched Amalfi Coast, I've spent years exploring every corner of this extraordinary country. Discovering Italy is the travel guide I wished existed when I first arrived — honest, detailed, and built on real experience rather than recycled listicles.
Travel has always been my escape from the everyday — and honestly, I enjoy the planning almost as much as being there. Researching destinations, mapping routes, finding that perfect trattoria tucked down a side street. My first trip to Italy changed everything. I stepped off the train in Rome, walked out into the afternoon light hitting the Colosseum, and knew this country was going to become a major part of my life.
Since that first visit, I've returned again and again — exploring Tuscany's hilltop towns, getting lost in Venice's labyrinth of canals, eating my way through Naples and Bologna, hiking the Cinque Terre trails, and discovering the quieter corners of Sicily, Puglia, and Umbria that most tourists never see. Each trip goes deeper. Each region reveals something new.
I'm not a traditional travel blogger. I work in healthcare IT. But Italy keeps pulling me back, and I finally decided to put everything I've learned into something useful — a site with real knowledge, honest prices, video content from the places I've actually been, and an AI trip planner that builds itineraries from years of real experience. Discovering Italy is the resource I wished existed when I first started planning trips here. It just took this long to figure out how to build it.
How Italy Became an Obsession
My first trip to Italy. Stepping out of Roma Termini station into the warm afternoon light, walking to the Colosseum, eating the best pasta of my life in a tiny restaurant near the Pantheon. Just like that, Italy became a part of me. The obsession began.
Florence, Venice, the Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre. Each trip went deeper — Puglia's trulli villages, Umbria's quiet hilltops, Sicily's baroque towns. 40+ countries of travel, but Italy has always been the first love. The planning became almost as enjoyable as the trips themselves.
Basilicata, Molise, Le Marche, Friuli Venezia Giulia. Wine regions of Piedmont and the volcanic landscapes of Sardinia. Each visit revealed a different Italy — one that tourist brochures completely ignore. The notebook of tips and recommendations grew thicker every trip.
I started documenting everything — video from piazzas, trattorias, coastal roads, and medieval towns. The idea crystallized: why does no Italy travel site show you what these places actually look and feel like? The dream of a proper travel resource took shape.
The site I'd been dreaming about for years finally became real — with video content, an AI trip planner, and years of personal experience powering every recommendation. Not a side hustle with recycled content. A real guide built by someone who genuinely loves this country.
The Person Behind the Pages
Healthcare IT professional by day, Italy travel obsessive by every other waking moment. Based in San Diego, California. What started as a single trip to Rome sparked a deep love for Italian culture, cuisine, and way of life. Multiple return trips across nearly every region of Italy — from the Alps to Sicily. 40+ countries of travel, but Italy has always been the first love. Enjoys the trip planning almost as much as the travel itself.
What You'll Never Find Here
I built this site because I got tired of Italy travel content that's secretly a press trip recap or a sponsored hotel review dressed up as honest advice. Discovering Italy exists because I wanted the resource I wished I had when I first started planning trips here.

More Than a Travel Blog
Discovering Italy isn't a collection of "Top 10" listicles. It's a living resource built on years of real experience, genuine passion, and technology that actually helps you plan a better trip. Here's what makes it different:
- Video guides for select destinations — see the piazzas, trattorias, and coastlines before you book
- An AI trip planner that builds custom itineraries with real prices, not hallucinated estimates
- Every price listed in both EUR and USD, updated regularly based on what I actually pay
- Deep regional coverage — not just Rome and Florence, but the quieter corners most travelers miss
